FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ENTERTAIN YOUR BRAIN!

1.)    IMPORTANT!  Information regarding this site owner's condition!

If you are a fan of Entertain Your Brain, you may have noticed a severe slowdown in the number of updates I have contributing lately.  This includes the daily updates in all of the pages, as well as the theatrical/DVD release dates, book release dates, video game release dates, etc.  I'm also slowing down the latest news pages and the number of reviews (which were mainly movie and TV reviews anyway.)  The reason I am doing all this is because I suffered a stroke on July 31, 2004.  The stroke affected my speech as well as my ability to type, because I also broke my right arm and my back.  To make matters worse, they found a hole in my heart that will require a catheter procedure in October of 2006.  I hope you will find it in your hearts to be patient while I resume my normal updates (in case you didn't know, I operate this site almost exclusively by myself, so most of my work is done by myself.)  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at shawn@entertainyourbrain.com and I will to try to reply quickly as I can.  Again, thank you for your patience while I make full recovery.

2.)    Who are you?

My name is Shawn McKenzie.  I live in Aurora, CO (a suburb east of Denver.)  I created this site because I am a huge entertainment geek who thought it might be fun to have an outlet for all my knowledge and opinions.  I also like to hear other people's opinions too.

3.)    What is Entertain Your Brain?

Entertain Your Brain is a site dedicated to the education and enjoyment of entertainment fans.  It went live on March 11, 2002.  At the moment it has content for the worlds of movies, television, and music (since those are my specific interests.)  I will have more worlds to come.

4.)    Why is some of the older stuff (specifically archived news) gone?

I need to trim some fat on my site (in over two years I have stacked up a lot of pages), so some of the older stuff needs to be deleted.  Don't worry...none of my old reviews will be deleted.

5.)    What happened to the charts (Box Office totals, Nielsen ratings, Billboard charts, etc.) and the release dates that used to be on the right side of your main pages?

They are still all there, but you need to click on the drop-down menus at the top of each page to look at the individual charts and release dates.  I did this because some people were complaining that those things were annoying to scroll down on the main pages.

6.)    What more worlds are coming?

As you can see, I am trying to add a book section.  In the future I want to have a video/computer game section, comic book section, internet section, role-playing game section, etc.  If you have a suggestion for more sections (because they entertain you), please write me at shawn@entertainyourbrain.com or post something on the Entertain Your Brain Message Board on the Home Page.

7.)    I like your site.  How can I contribute?

You can contribute by sending me any news tips you get in the entertainment world that isn't already being reported by everyone else.  I get my news from various established sites (E! Online, Zap2it, IMDB, etc.), but I could really use some exclusive news.  If you have a news tip you want to pass along, please write me at shawn@entertainyourbrain.com.  I will give you full credit or keep you anonymous if you prefer (you can give me a goofy alias if you want.)  You can also contribute by sending me your review of a movie, TV show, CD, book, or video game you have seen/heard/read/played.  In addition, you can send me your review of things in those other suggested worlds I am proposing (it might make their formation arrive a little quicker!)  My guidelines are: make your review at least 400 words long, keep it clean, and give it a 1 to 5 rating (halves are okay, i.e. 1 1/2, 2 1/2, etc.)  I may edit it for grammatical and/or spelling errors, but otherwise I will leave it intact.

8.)    Dude, this album I just bought rules!  You gotta check it out!  Can I send you the MP3?

I'm not really hip to the whole file-sharing thing over the internet, but if you want to make me a copy on CD or cassette and send it to me, send it to:

Shawn McKenzie
14852 E. Kentucky Dr. #921
Aurora, CO 80012

9.)   I work for an entertainment company.  Your site would be a great place to promote my movie/TV show/CD/etc.  Can I send you a copy at the same address?

You most certainly can!  I will also give kudos to you in the form of a link to your site if you want.  I will state that I can't guarantee that I will give it a good review, but I will give it a fair one.  I prefer CD's or DVD's, but if you send me a cassette or video, I won't complain.  Please include any pertinent information you would like me to know about the product.

10.)    I've noticed that you post your news later than most sites.  Why is that?

It is because I don't subscribe to a service that posts news to my site, so I have to gather the information myself.  This way I can add or subtract the content I feel is pertinent.  I just give you the basic facts.  If I have an opinion about something, I will include it in the "Reviews" section of each page (I also give opinions about entertainment in the free newsletter that you can subscribe to as well.)  Also, I post it late because, until this site is my prime source of income, I have to work at my paying job all day.

11.)    I've noticed that you post your movie reviews before the release date most of the time, but you don't post your TV reviews before the premiere date.  Why is that?

I am fortunate enough to have connections at the radio stations I work for to get early screenings for movies, but I have no such connections in the world of television, so I have to catch the show along with everyone else.  My review can still be useful so you can avoid the show in the future if you didn't catch the premiere yourself.  If you are a TV show producer or promoter and you would like me you review your show before the premiere date, please send it to the address above.  Please include any links you would like me to include for people to get further information.

12.)    Why do you have hardly any album reviews?

I am still trying to work out some connections on increasing my access to new albums for reviewing, so until that happens, the reviews will be slow to come.  If you work for a label and you would like me to review your album on my site, please send me a copy to the address above.  Please include any links you would like me to include for people to get further information.

13.)   Why didn't you review this movie, TV show, album, etc.?

This site is fairly new, but I do plan on giving a rating (if not a full review) to older movies currently in theaters, TV shows still on the air, etc.  Since I currently have a full-time job, I don't have time to write reviews of everything yet.  If you would like to send me your review of something I haven't reviewed, please send me it at shawn@entertainyourbrain.com.  (Please make it at least 400 words long, keep the language PG-rated, and give it a rating from 1 to 5.)

14.)    I've been reading some of your reviews lately, and most of them seem too positive.  Do you like everything?

No, I don't like everything.  I just happen to like being entertained, so if a movie, TV show, or album does just that, I give it praise.  I try to tread evenly between the worlds of the regular moviegoer and the hardcore critic.  That is why a regular movie, TV show, or album might get the same rating as a potential award winner:  it did its job of entertaining me.  This site is called Entertain Your Brain after all!  If you feel differently than I do about a review, please feel free to post your opinion on the Entertain Your Brain Message Board or email me about it.

15.)    Why are the totals for the box office results different when you post it to your "Latest News" than when you post it to the right on Tuesdays?

When I give news about box office totals, I usually post it on Mondays, but those are just estimates.  The final totals are posted to the right and are compiled by Exhibitor Relations.  When the final results are posted on Tuesdays, they are sometimes are different, because the total numbers (and sometimes their place in the top 10) are different.

16.)    Why are most of your album reviews so top 40?  You do realize there are many unknown artists that deserve some attention, don't you?

Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to work out a way to gain access to more albums to review, so I have to buy most of the albums I review.  I don't make a lot of money (yet), so I choose artists that I like.  Fortunately for all of you, my tastes in music run the gamut, so that is why there is a lot of different styles and genres represented here.  Like I said before, if you would like to send me your review of something I haven't reviewed, please send me it at shawn@entertainyourbrain.com.  (Please make it at least 400 words long, keep the language PG-rated, and give it a rating from 1 to 5.)

17.)    That album came out weeks ago, and you're just getting around to it now?

It may have taken awhile to get the CD, or I may have run out of time between my movie reviews, TV reviews, and life in general (yes, I have one!)  Also, another person's review might be a little old because they have a life too.  I will accept anyone's review of any movie, TV show (please try to write a review that is still airing new episodes), or album, no matter how old it is.

18.)    Why don't you have a review of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer?" "The Gilmore Girls?" "Alias?" etc...

I made a decision to only do reviews of shows that have premiered since my site went live (March 11, 2002.)  I do watch those shows, and if you check out the daily highlights for my Sweeps Guides, I make occasional comments about the developments being made on those shows.  Like I've already stated several times already, if you want to submit a review of a TV show, please feel free to do so.

19.)   This site is cool and all, but I wish it had...

Whatever suggestions you have for something you would like to see or something you would like me to review, please write me at shawn@entertainyourbrain.com or post it on the Entertain Your Brain Message Board on the Home Page.
