Top 5 Worst Movies of 2002

Opinions by Shawn McKenzie 01/03/2003

I didn't see every single movie of 2002, but I did see a majority of them, so I can safely say that I know what was not worth seeing in 2002.  You may disagree with my choices, and that's fine, but know what I don't like.  These movies just plain sucked!  See what you think.

5. Jackass: The Movie-Okay, I know this movie was a big hit, and it has a huge cult following, but the movie is just plain stupid!  I’m not one of those types that thinks movies control our kids, but this one might kill a few brain cells.

4. Solaris-Steven Soderbergh directed his bud George Clooney in a remake of a Russian sci-fi movie from the early ‘70s, and came up with one of the most boring space flicks ever.  This movie isn’t even worth the two highly publicized Clooney butt shots for the ladies.

3. A Walk to Remember-This is the only movie on these lists that I didn’t do a full review of (it was released before my site went live in March, and I’ve only done full reviews of movies since it went live), but trust me, this one is a stinker.  If you saw Love Story, you saw this movie.  It is a blatant rip-off of that 1970 Ryan O’Neal/Ali MacGraw weeper (just replace the college with a high school.)  Is it a good movie if you laugh when one of the main characters die of a horrible disease?

2. FearDotCom-Speaking of laughs, this one is worthy of “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”  It laughably calls itself a horror movie, but unlike the brilliantly funny Jason X before it, it actually expected you to take it seriously!  I think a fellow moviegoer at the screening wrapped it up perfectly when he said the only people who were scared of the events in the movie were the people on the screen.

1. Possession-Like Solaris, this movie was extremely boring, but I think its biggest crime is the fact that it was directed by a guy who I previously credited as one of my favorite directors, Neil LaBute.  He was the director of In the Company of Men, Your Friends & Neighbors, and Nurse Betty.  All of those films were harsh, but funny.  This film was neutered and dull.  I hope this isn't a new trend for LaBute.

Dis-Honorable Mentions (movies I gave a 1 ½, 2, or 2 ½ camera rating that didn’t quite make the list):  Swimfan, Murder By Numbers, Like Mike, Eight Legged Freaks, Abandon, Half Past Dead, Deuces Wild, Bad Company, Serving Sara, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, The Truth About Charlie, and Chicago.

What do you think of my choices?  What would you choose as the worst movies of 2002?  Please go to the Home Page and post your opinion on the Entertain Your Brain Message Board!
